Propagation: Cutting or occasionally seed, grafting/budding

  • by semi-hardwood stem tip cuttings, in summer. Apply IBA TALC 3000 PPM. Use intermittent mist. Root in 8-12 weeks. Elm may be propagated by root cuttings also. Storing the cuttings for 2-12 weeks at 35 degrees F improves rooting. Cuttings may need shade on hot summer days, especially for the first two weeks..
  • by cleft grafts. Use a U. parvifolia as graftstock.
  • by seeds, in spring. Germinates at 70-85 degrees F. The seeds can also be harvested in spring. The seeds need stratify 40F 2-3mo.. The usual germination temperature is 70-85 degrees F.
