The genus name honors J. Koelreuter, a German professor. Very close to Koelreuteria bipinnata, but evergreen and much more cold sensitive.

Blooming Habits:
Small fragrant yellow flowers in dense panicles, up to 18 inches long (45 cm), in late spring to early summer.

Fruiting Habits:
Large clusters of two-inch long bright pink capsules with papery texture: "Chinese lanterns".
