There are a dozen of Alamandas coming from tropical America. They belong to the oleander family and as in many other plants from this family, they have a thick, milky, toxic sap. The genus is named after the 18th century Swiss doctor, Frédéric-Louis Allamand, who was physician in the Dutch navy, and travelled to Surinam.
