Origin: Mexico (San Luis Potosi, Guanajuato, Oaxaca)

Growth Habits: Barrel cactus, solitary, bluish green stem, 8 to 12 (to 20) inches in diameter (20-30-50 cm); 16 to 21 ribs; areoles with yellow felt; 4 reddish central spines, up to 1.4 inches long (3.5 cm); 6 to 8 radials, 0.8 inch long (2 cm).

Watering Needs: In Phoenix, little to no water when established, outside. Rot prone in winter if kept wet.

Propagation: Seeds

The Spanish name comes from the fact that this cactus has been used for making cactus candies.

Blooming Habits:
The unusual, 1.5-inch (4 cm), pink and white striped flowers appear from early spring into summer.
